I would recommend printing no larger than A1 size. Although some level of grain is intentional (to enhance that retro feel), larger than A1 might result in loss of detail and too much grain.

Each person has their own style, in addition to wall and furniture colour, location of the frame, amount of light, etc. But, since you're asking so nicely... my preference is to use a matboard to give breathing room around the artwork (A2 print on A1 frame with a matboard, for example), and for the material: thin black aluminium frames for black & white artwork, or light wood frames for colour ones.
